Navarra has one of the most varied climates in Spain: from the humid, green north, similar to the Basque Country, to the semi-arid south of the Ribera del Ebro where the sun beats down in summer. That diversity makes a greenhouse a useful tool in almost any part of the region, though for very different reasons depending on the zone.
In the Ribera the extreme summer heat requires shade netting. In the north, humidity calls for good ventilation. These are almost opposite uses of the same greenhouse.
- North: prioritise ventilation against humidity
- South: shade netting in July and August
- Mountain: solid closure for cold spring nights
The climate of Navarra and its three zones
Navarra is not uniform. For growing purposes, it helps to distinguish three areas:
Northern zone (Pyrenees, humid valleys): Atlantic climate with abundant rain, cool summers and late springs. A greenhouse extends the season and protects from excess humidity, much like in the Basque Country or Asturias.
Middle zone: transitional climate with cold winters and mild summers. A greenhouse lets you start sowing earlier in spring and extend harvests into autumn. Ideal for tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers.
Ribera del Ebro (Tudela and surroundings): continental Mediterranean climate with dry, very hot summers. Here the greenhouse is used to shield crops from extreme heat in July and August using shade netting, and to grow through winter when temperatures are more moderate.
Which greenhouse works best in each Navarra zone
- Humid north: plastic tunnel with wide ventilation. The Model I 4m or the Model A 6m depending on available space.
- Middle zone: the Model I 4m covers a family garden well; the Model A if you want to scale up. A solid closure is key to protect against March–April frosts.
- Ribera: greenhouse with shade netting and good height. The Model A 6m, with its larger air volume, handles extreme summer temperatures much better.
Recommended crops in Navarra
The climatic diversity allows for a wide range of crops:
- Tomato and pepper: in any zone, a greenhouse improves ripening and shields from weather surprises.
- Artichoke and asparagus: the Ribera has a long tradition with these vegetables; a greenhouse extends the season.
- Lettuce and leafy greens: in the middle and northern zones, continuous production through winter.
- Piquillo pepper: Navarra has its own variety; a greenhouse improves fruit quality.
- Aromatic herbs and flowers: in the north, a greenhouse is almost essential for basil and coriander.
Conclusion
In Navarra, where the climate changes from valley to valley, a greenhouse adapts to the needs of each zone. Whether you live in the green valleys of the north or the dry Ribera in the south, there is a practical use for it. The key is choosing the right model and managing ventilation or shading according to the season.
For most areas of Navarra, the Model I 4m polytunnel is the ideal starting point. If you have more space and want greater production, the Model A 6m is our most versatile option. Made in Spain, delivered in 48h.
